Frankly speaking, the 90s is the only decade in the history of cinema that I feel no enthusiasm and interest towards. But I haven’t seen a lot of movies that could change my list. For example, Jean-Claude Biette has made four films in the 90s, and Paulo Rocha shot O Rio do Ouro which I dream about. (So the 90s aren’t so boring after all!) I do not lay claim to some expert generalization. This is only a list of movies that I live with and to which I return — in some cases, every day. After the completion of this list, I noticed that 9 out of 10 films here could make an interesting thematic retrospective. A leitmotiv of this top-ten is farewell to the old world, an amazed finding oneself in the new world, and sometimes — an attempt to live by the old rules and imitate the past. (Just look at the character of Xavier Beauvois in Le vent de la nuit, trying to succeed to the experience of his friend, who lived through the 1968, as if it could be possible today). 1990s in Russia didn’t give us cinema that could help understand the reasons for what is happening here and now, 20 years later. There are only the old videotaped press-conferences of Egor Letov and Eduard Limonov, which can be found in mediocre quality on YouTube. (If only someone made a movie out of these videos!). But every single morning when I read the next scary news from Moscow and Kiev, the images from Man in the Shadows and D’Est come to life in my head. So happens that these movies explained to me the nature of the USSR disintegration.

Finally, The Gentle Age by Sergei Solovyov doesn’t fit in this list due to formal criteria. It is the film of 2000, shot in autumn of 1999, at the very end of the decade. Did I watch any other film more times in my life? I’m not sure. For me it unites all the other movies in the list. I was a child in 90s, and don’t remember them so well. Sometimes I think that my personal experience was long ago replaced with the images from the The Gentle Age, which I continue to mistaken for my own memories.
